AI Doesn’t Care About You (But it Sure Feels Like it Does)
Ever had one of those moments where ChatGPT drops a piece of wisdom so perfectly timed it feels like it sees you? Like it just gets your stress, your frustration, your existential crisis over work, life, and whether you should send that email?
It listens without judgment. It gives you just-in-time insights. It asks the right questions. It even feels supportive, encouraging—maybe even loving.
But here’s the thing: AI doesn’t actually give a crap about you.
It’s a mirror, reflecting back what you put in.
The problem: AI can be a yes-man (if you let it).
We love validation. We love feeling seen and supported. And AI? It’s a pro at serving up exactly what we want to hear—especially if we train it to. We ask for reassurance, it gives it. We seek confirmation, it provides it.
This is where it gets tricky. If you ask AI only to validate your thinking, it will. If you want only easy answers, it’ll serve those up, too. The risk? Confirmation bias. Enablement. Staying in your comfort zone instead of growing.
The fix: Use AI as a challenger, not just a cheerleader.
The real magic happens when you flip the script. Instead of using AI as a sounding board for what you already believe, use it to push you further.
- Ask it to argue against you. “What’s the opposite perspective I should consider?”
- Let it poke holes in your ideas. “What are the flaws in this approach?”
- Make it a coach, not just a consultant. “What are three tough questions I should ask myself before making this decision?”
- Get it to stretch your leadership muscles. “How would a leader I admire handle this differently than I would?”
Learn from AI’s best traits (without becoming a robot).
Here’s the wild part: AI actually models some fantastic leadership behaviors—ones we can all learn from.
- It never reacts emotionally. Imagine leading with that level of cool-headed objectivity.
- It asks thought-provoking questions. What if we focused more on asking than telling?
- It personalizes without ego. It meets people where they are, no agenda attached.
The best leaders do what AI does well—give thoughtful, personalized guidance—but with heart. They challenge without tearing down, question without triggering, and lead with both intelligence and humanity.
AI won’t lead for you—but it can make you a better leader.
At the end of the day, AI is an incredible tool—but leadership is still on YOU. Use it to reflect, expand, and challenge your thinking, but don’t let it replace your gut, your values, or your ability to truly connect.
Because AI might seem like it cares—but real leadership means actually giving a darn.
